A message from the labs

Stay tuned for a series of demonstrations and testing of Broadband Forum’s flagship standards and open source software!

Interoperability is at the heart of all broadband networking technologies, and our standards are at the cornerstone. Bringing together the industry’s key players, architectures and users, the Broadband Forum continues to be a key driving force for the development of global interoperability for the broadband ecosystem, making the first connection with our plugfests, event demonstrations and certification programs.

Following our successful CloudCO Demonstrations at last year’s Network X event, we are preparing a wider range of use cases for the Broadband Forum Innovation Demonstrations at this year’s event, in Paris on October 8-10. This is the perfect opportunity for our members to showcase their products, technical expertise, and drive new business. Read more about our upcoming plugfests and demonstrations, including USP and PON, in this interoperability-special newsletter to learn more!

News and updates

  • “Automation grows the pie” by creating products and services that might otherwise be too expensive to provide, was the message expressed during our latest vBASE webinar on Advancements in Broadband User Services and Customer Experience. During the webinar Volker Effelsberg, DT; Sameer Shah, DZS; Daniel Fithian, Ozmo; Marcel Sponer, Vodafone Group explored the key he technical advancements that are helping service providers achieve their goals in their transition to services-led broadband. Find out more key takeaways from the webinar and receive the slide deck here.
  • The WWC Work Area launched an Operator Survey during the Summer 2024 Member meeting, to help assess and prioritize use cases, deployment scenarios and requirements for the work on Multi-tenant Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). Mike Talbert, WWC Multi-Tenant FWA Project Stream Leader, encouraged service providers to take part in the survey to ensure the architecture of the project is developed to meet their standards and needs here.
  • In June, Broadband Forum Members came together for our Summer and Annual Member 2024 Meeting in Incheon, South Korea as we progress further towards a services-led broadband ecosystem. Read about our latest work area updates here.
  • The Fall Member Meeting’s Town Hall Innovation Series will be the Smart Home and IoT. You can learn more and submit a proposal to speak at the meeting here.

Certification Programs & Plugfests

  • Last year, Broadband Forum announced the first broadband vendors to complete interoperability testing for our vOMCI standard (TR-451 during a plugfest held at the University of New Hampshire’s InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL). Altice Labs, MT2, Nokia and Radisys Corporation took part in the plugfest where eight products, along with the OB-BAA project, participated in the interoperability test with the standard. Read the full article in Lightwave here.
  • In 2022, Broadband Forum and HomeGrid Forum jointly launched the inaugural G.hn Access Pre-Certification Plugfest. The plugfest, with participation from both BBF and HGF members, demonstrated the continued importance of G.hn Access technology’s role in delivering multi-gigabit services. The news was covered in Fibre Systems here. You can find out more about our G.hn Access Certification Program (“GHNA”) here.
  • A CloudCO Demonstration, led by Broadband Forum and joined by a number of our members at Network X 2023, displayed how network operators can unlock network efficiencies and new service delivery from a disaggregated and virtualized software-defined broadband network. Read the full article in App Developer Magazine here. Continuing our success, we will lead a wider range of demonstrations at this year’s Network X event in Paris, on October 8-10
  • The Broadband Forum will also be participating in the Fiber Connect 2024 Proof of Concept Program on July 28-31, with demos of our Connected Home specifications, TR-247 and TR-369 (USP). The PoC demonstrations highlight the importance of ensuring that the equipment and devices used to connect the home can interoperate with the services and applications that are driving broadband beyond the connectivity that fiber delivers.
  • On the topic of USP, UNH-IOL will be hosting the USP Plugfest during the week of September 16, 2024. Registration is now open and exclusive to Broadband Forum members here.
  • Through its FAN Work Area and in partnership with laboratories from around the world, the Broadband Forum is launching a series of PON plugfests in October 2024. This is a great opportunity for vendors to share knowledge, validate equipment in real-world scenarios, and build relationships that help with future collaborations. Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, email info@broadband-forum.org to register your interest in participating

Get involved in our most recent projects!

  • ATA: Application of L4S to Broadband Networks – The ATA Work Area aims to define how to implement L4S capability into a broadband network. This will allow operators to offer services that can support the requirements of latency sensitive applications at the same time as the throughput sensitive applications. Hear more from ATA Work Area Director Jonathan Newton on the project here.
  • SDN/NFV: Intent-based interface between Orchestrator and SDN Management and Control (Occo-Nf-sdn) – The work is intended for both operators and vendors to facilitate and simplify the development of the Intent-based interface between Orchestrator and SDN Management and Control (Occo-Nf-sdn) according to the operator’s services. The project is set to enable simplified network management and enhance network automation for the operator. Hear more from SDN and NFV Work Area Director Bruno Cornaglia on the project here.
  • FAN: Energy Power Saving Requirements, Test Plan, and Data Model – The project aims to help the industry in lowering power costs and consumption. It will establish a set of power saving requirements that can be used by service providers, and equipment and component vendors to ensure interoperability for protocol specific power saving methodologies.
